Camping Style: Renee Does Nature, Thanksgiving Edition

Alright, so let’s be real here. I feel like I’m not as high maintenance as one would expect a style blogger to be, and I’m here to prove it to you with my 2nd-day hair and unshowered-natureness in this very delayed post about my Thanksgiving camping trip. While one may not call me the least maintenance person either, I think I do ok keeping a balance of realistic expectations when it comes to spending 4 days in the great outdoors.

It wasn’t until I met my boyfriend and started spending time with his family that I’ve recently gotten back into camping a couple times a year. Before that, it had been since my freshman year of college that I had actually done this, so I’m getting more and more relaxed with each experience. It’s really nice to be able to chill, enjoy the outdoors, and not care about your appearance as much. When my boyfriend’s family announced our Thanksgiving get together (about 20-some people) would be a camping trip up north in Pismo Beach this year, I was a little intrigued about how it would all come together, as well as excited. Excited for the flannels, the layers, the makeup-free days, the drinks by the fire (Bourbon Apple Cider anyone??), the off-roading on the sand dunes, and the amazing campfire food.

When it came to packing, I definitely had to have some strategy. I am a person who totally believes that you can be anywhere doing anything and your skin care does not need to suffer! I had a treasure trove of Sephora product samples, such as cleansers and moisturizers, so I was able to toss a few into my bag and finally use them up. Seriously, all those free samples are perfect for camping trips!

I can definitely camp and enjoy nature without needing too much, but I do also like to be somewhat comfortable. Maybe some would call this “glamping” since we were at a campground with showers and bathrooms, but that definitely made the experience much easier this time around. We slept in a tent, on cots, and I chose to only shower every other day since I was allowing my skin to take some time off. That part was nice. Pitching the tent on a spider nest however, was not! Thank God we didn’t notice until we were packing up…that may or may not be where I draw the line in my nature experiences.

When it came to clothing, I packed comfortable, warm, and layer-friendly options like flannels, stretch skinny jeans, leggings, wool socks, and warm pajama-like tops. Most of the time I was lounging in leggings, converse, and layered shirts and jackets, but for Thanksgiving Day I chose one of my favorite flannels, layered with a knit tank and thermal long sleeve underneath, and a heavy utility jacket on top. I wore some comfy boots with thick socks inside, and a camping staple – a beanie. On my face was only a tinted moisturizer from a free sample and mascara. Yes, I know, mascara is cheating. But if there is one product I cannot live without, it’s mascara. I have dark but fine eyelashes…so they tend to not even be visible on their own making my eyes look tired and haggard. All other makeup ditched, I was keeping the mascara! And thank goodness for professional Canon lenses making you look good! This would never fly as an iPhone pic. My boyfriend snapped these on my 5D about 5 minutes before our Thanksgiving feast, during golden hour. All that beautiful light is natural! Couldn’t have asked for a better way to spend Thanksgiving this year! :)

Flannel Friday…

IMG_9780IMG_9739IMG_9784IMG_9789

Being a Midwest girl, I have a natural affinity for flannel and all things cozy (thanks, winter…) I’m happy that even with the warm weather year round in LA, it still cools down enough during the evenings and occasional gloomy days to bust these out often enough. I am constantly layering with flannel and I definitely believe you can never have too many choices. When I stumbled upon this little number a while back at the end of summer I pretty much had to have it. This guy is WAY oversized, which I love right now, (I’m actually wearing an XS and it’s huge) …and it has fun little details such as hidden slit pockets lining up with the side-seams, and gingham sleeve linings for a fun little contrasting touch when you roll your sleeves. Not to mention….super soft and comfortable.

On this particular Friday it was pretty tough to get out of bed for the early morning studio record with the cast of our show. In fact, I skipped the shower and consequent blowdry in favor of an extra half hour of sleep and picking up coffee on my way. The studio gets pretty chilly, so this outfit was perfect for maintaining that “protesting getting out of bed today” look. Oh, wait. That’s every day. See why you can never have too many??

Paired with rolled navy skinnies and zipper booties in observance of fall, this particular flannel is one that can be dressed up or down. In fact, I just wore this on a night out tucked into a black skater skirt with sky-high heels last weekend to fancy it up. I highly recommend everyone snatch this one up, and maybe even size down a little! Yay for feeling small!

Perfect Fall Maxi…

IMG_9543IMG_9548IMG_9510IMG_9591IMG_9604IMG_9636Fall is my absolute favorite time of year to shop. For some reason, there’s nothing I love more than sifting through varying pieces to use for layering. For some reason I feel like the possibilities are so much more endless than with summer or spring shopping, where the clothes tend to come off a little bit. It’s much easier to add interest and depth to an outfit when you’re piling it on.

That said, a little shout out to one of my best friends back home! My friend Megan has great style herself, and she knows the way to my heart when it comes to clothing for sure. My birthday was a couple of months ago and I found she had left me a lovely little present in my inbox to do some shopping at Urban Outfitters, and lord knows I can’t hang onto a gift card for very long, so I was quickly watching the inventory for something perfect and unique for fall when I came across this skirt. SOLD! Thanks Megan! You’re seriously the best :)

I was obsessed with this skirt the moment I saw it, from the gorgeous scarf print, to the beautiful fall-inspired bright colors, to the flattering length and fit. Don’t have to show me twice, it was in my cart so fast. This skirt was even better when it arrived, with the high waist making it easy to pair with crops and sweaters alike…not to mention hide those food bumps from a night of chowing at happy hour. I didn’t want to take away too much, so my first time wearing it, the pairing of choice was a simple whit crop top, allowing the pretty colors to really pop. For when it cooled down at night (because that is LA’s definition of fall – night time) I chose an awesome striped and oversized cardigan for added texture, and a bit of pattern mixing with the scarf print, and of course, topped off the look with my favorite hat for fall. For the cherry on top, you can never go wrong with layered delicate gold necklaces and rings. I think this is officially my go-to fall outfit for when I’m in a pinch and don’t want to think too hard. We may be seeing this one a lot….

Pants real big, sweater real big, top real big, err’thing real big…..Mannie Fresh anyone? Man, I loved 2004…

Anyway. LA has been coldddd the last couple weeks, and I’ve been feeling the need to stay cozy and comfortable as much as possible. I’m definitely channeling my inner Rachel Zoe with this one – wide leg flares, oversized open sweater and loose top. I feel like that’s pretty much all she wears. At least for everyday wear. The only difference is instead of it being a sunny chilly day, we had some rainy chilly days, so I swapped her standard oversized sunglasses for an oversized floppy hat. It was sprinkling on and off in little spurts, but rain and moisture absolutely destroys my hair. Better have a hat or a hair tie handy because I look like a drowned rat when it rains! You know those girls who get rained on and still look hot with the slightly drippy, wet textured hair? Yeah, that’s not me.

Floral, Fringe & fishnet.

I was feeling in the mood to go a little boho-cozy today. I like mixing textures, but was feeling somewhat neutral, so I threw on my taupe fringe booties, gray skinnies, a gray open-knit sweater, and my trusty hippie headwrap. I am in love with this little headwrap because it’s perfect for days when my flyaways are acting up. Today, my hair just felt unmanageable and all over the place, so on it went, keeping everything in place, without being pulled back. I opted for jewelry with a little more of a vintage “used” feel than my standard modern-and-delicate geometric pieces I usually layer all over the place. It was cozy and comfortable, until I tripped outside Starbucks and my latte slammed into the ground. That was fun coming back inside and reordering the exact same drink, from the exact same barista, in what most guys would find a very distinct outfit, with my weird little head thing and all. Soooo chic…

But speaking of guys and the weird things that girls wear… let me toot my boyfriend’s horn for a second: one of the things I love about him most is he is very receptive to fashion and trends. He has simple, masculine style but still with an interest in branching out and trying new things. He likes to look good, even if it’s a simple tee, and I love that. And the best part, all the weird combinations of things I wear and interesting trends I come home with he actually likes…including my little hippie headwrap and array of printed pants. The true test will be when I come home with a dropcrotch pant. I’ll report back on whether I’m single or not after that happens. I like fashion risks occasionally, and so far there hasn’t been much I’ve come home with where he makes that classic male “what the hell is that on your body” expression. What a keeper. :)
