Snow Envy…

With all of this snowstorm action happening on the East coast, it’s hard not be a little jealous of the beautiful, clean, white, snowfall – inconvenient or not. Throwing this post back to a month ago, we had the privilege of getting one full actual day of snow this year when we were back in Nebraska, and it had been at least a couple years since I actually saw a Midwest winter be pretty in my time visiting home. I was stoked, and I know I get to wake up most mornings of the year not having to worry about being too insanely cold, how I’m going to get to work, or having to scrape my car (DEFINITELY don’t miss that), but I do actually really miss just having a good, cold, snow day. A reason to bundle up on the couch by the window in your PJs drinking tea or hot coffee, and a reason to throw all your plans and to-do lists out the window for the day. As “lucky” as southern-californians are, that is not EVER something we get the privilege of enjoying.

It only snowed the last couple of days I was home this year, but I always plan ahead in case since Nebraska weather can be pretty unpredictable. I didn’t bundle up to the full degree, since we weren’t outside much of the day when it snowed, but since we flew out that evening to head back to LA this outfit was appropriate. Warm and cozy to handle a short amount of time in this snowy weather, but light and layered enough to transition to California weather.

The jacket is my all-time favorite ribbed leather jacket from Zara, given to me by my boyfriend as a birthday gift. The zip skinnies are made of the absolute softest stretch denim material, and are SO comfortable for flying (seriously, I’d sleep in them), and the scarf was also a gift, this time from my sister. Top it all off with a cozy beanie from Target’s winter collection, and the layering was perfect for transitioning from a daytime of snow to a cool LA evening.

I’m On A Boat!

DSC00653image2IMG_9857IMG_9846sq2DSC00542DSC00649DSC00608DSC00630

So, it’s been a while since I devoted an entire Saturday to drinking, and a little over a week ago we had the pleasure (no really, it was a ton of fun) of cramming two birthdays into one day, both in completely different areas of Los Angeles. Well, one of those happened to be a daytime booze cruise celebrating the birth and general awesomeness of my good friend Raechel! What do you get when you combine 60 people, an open bar, and a party yacht in Marina Del Rey? A DAMN GOOD TIME. Oh, and quite possibly a hangover before 8pm. I’m not a heavy drinker by any means, and Lord knows I’m not 21 anymore! So this was quite the feat. Or “defeat”, however you want to refer to it.

Regardless of how badly I should have napped before heading off to Birthday #2 in Hollywood, Birthday #1 was an awesome time with an amazing group of friends, most of whom it’s been too long since I’ve seen. And when you’re on a boat, it’s only natural to implement a nautical theme. In fact, the invitation read “Dressing in Nautical Attire Encouraged, and Drinking Like A Sailor Required.” Umm…done and done. By everyone…

I had a lot of fun going through my closet and picking something out to wear. I love a good theme, it always adds an extra element of challenge into getting ready! Everything I selected was something I already had on hand, and I think it hit the sailor vibe quite well without overdoing it. I chose to pair my high waisted red midi skirt from ASOS, a basic white crop, and my trusty navy and white nautical sweater for when it cooled down a bit after dark. It was gorgeous boat weather, hitting near 80 degrees in the sunshine, so this combination was perfect! And let’s be honest, how cute are my friends?!? This crew knows how to have a good time and there’s no one I would have rather spent my afternoon with! Cheers to Raechel, and Cheers to an amazing group of people just lovin’ life on a Saturday! :)

Peacocking.

ImageImageImageImage

When I was a kid, I was very close with my great-grandmother. She lived on farmland that was essentially crops-only for as far back as I can remember. By the time I was old enough to know what was up, all the animals were gone except for a coop of chickens and peacocks. Yes….peacocks. My great-grandmother had about half a dozen peacocks hanging out in this coop, bouncing around in the rafters, who by default were best friends with their pals the chickens. This totally fascinated me, because let’s be real, who has peacocks on their farm in Nebraska!?! Well regardless, my sister and I grew up playing on her farmland, exploring, running around getting stung be bees, chased by raccoons, playing with barn cats, and timidly checking out these peacocks from time to time. We had an abundance of beautiful peacock feathers at all times, which also got played with. That is, if by “played with” you mean swatting each other in the face or whipping each other with them (Fresh off the bird, those things are about 3-4 feet long at least!).

My love for peacocks still exists, although I don’t want to play with them, chase them, or own one at any point anymore. It took me a long time to figure out as a kid, IF YOU STOP RUSHING AT THEM the poor birds are actually quite nice and tame if used to being around people. They’re beautiful animals though, and I love when I find peacock pieces to incorporate into my wardrobe, like this necklace I found at a vintage store in Omaha many years ago. I haven’t busted it out in a while, and in honor of the weather cooling back down a touch this weekend, I thought I’d post this outfit from an equally cool day a while back that hasn’t made it to the blog yet. A soft skater skirt and simple sweater and scarf keep me warm, and the printed tights and peacock pendant add for a touch of visual interest.
