I’m On A Boat!

DSC00653image2IMG_9857IMG_9846sq2DSC00542DSC00649DSC00608DSC00630

So, it’s been a while since I devoted an entire Saturday to drinking, and a little over a week ago we had the pleasure (no really, it was a ton of fun) of cramming two birthdays into one day, both in completely different areas of Los Angeles. Well, one of those happened to be a daytime booze cruise celebrating the birth and general awesomeness of my good friend Raechel! What do you get when you combine 60 people, an open bar, and a party yacht in Marina Del Rey? A DAMN GOOD TIME. Oh, and quite possibly a hangover before 8pm. I’m not a heavy drinker by any means, and Lord knows I’m not 21 anymore! So this was quite the feat. Or “defeat”, however you want to refer to it.

Regardless of how badly I should have napped before heading off to Birthday #2 in Hollywood, Birthday #1 was an awesome time with an amazing group of friends, most of whom it’s been too long since I’ve seen. And when you’re on a boat, it’s only natural to implement a nautical theme. In fact, the invitation read “Dressing in Nautical Attire Encouraged, and Drinking Like A Sailor Required.” Umm…done and done. By everyone…

I had a lot of fun going through my closet and picking something out to wear. I love a good theme, it always adds an extra element of challenge into getting ready! Everything I selected was something I already had on hand, and I think it hit the sailor vibe quite well without overdoing it. I chose to pair my high waisted red midi skirt from ASOS, a basic white crop, and my trusty navy and white nautical sweater for when it cooled down a bit after dark. It was gorgeous boat weather, hitting near 80 degrees in the sunshine, so this combination was perfect! And let’s be honest, how cute are my friends?!? This crew knows how to have a good time and there’s no one I would have rather spent my afternoon with! Cheers to Raechel, and Cheers to an amazing group of people just lovin’ life on a Saturday! :)

LBD From Day to Night Challenge with DailyLook!…Holiday Style!

Screen Shot 2014-12-05 at 3.54.57 PMScreen Shot 2014-12-05 at 3.55.21 PM

I was thrilled recently to be asked to participate in a styling challenge with DailyLook, taking an LBD of my choice from their online selection and styling it from day to night. I love a good LBD, so this was a lot of fun for me. I feel like DailyLook has some amazing dresses available right now, and being asked to create some style sets was perfect timing to kick off a few Holiday Posts I have coming up.

After carefully browsing the selection of Little Black Dresses on DailyLook, and finding several I wanted in my closet, I chose this simple black shift number that I kept not being able to take my eyes off of. Maybe that sounds silly for this style challenge that is seasonally timed with the holidays. A good part of me wanted to gravitate toward some of the beautiful lace, embroidered, and beaded dresses I had in my wishlist, however, there was something about the extremely flattering shape of this simple shift, it’s versatility to fit the challenge, and the lack of shift dresses currently in my closet that sealed the deal for me. The winner for me was the “Richie Shift Dress”, and it’s affordable price and deep V made it the perfect amount “simple sexy”. I styled these two looks based on something I would actually wear to my office at work, and how I would switch it up to wear the same dress for a night out on the town, particularly a Holiday party.

For the Day Look, I paired the dress with comfortable, casual printed slip-ons, a neutral gray crossbody satchel, and gold art deco inspired bangles. An absolute staple in my wardrobe this time of year, along with several LBDs, is a faux fur vest, and I absolutely love the texture in this one. I know I know, this is probably not a super practical work outfit for a lot of people, but I am very fortunate that for working in a non-fashion related field, I get to pretty much be myself and wear whatever I want to work. I work for a major animation studio in a production environment, and half of my job is at a desk, and the other half is running around. So this is 100% perfect my job in entertainment.

Moving on to my Night Look, I definitely used the addition of some eye-catching accessories to spice this up and make it Holiday Party ready. The 60s-70s wannabe kid in me went straight to a fantastic over-the-knee boot to compliment the sleek tapered shape of the shift. With a mixture of more avant-garde statement jewelry and a contrasting beaded metallic clutch, this simple shift just went from zero to hero and is completely party ready without showing too much skin.

Game Day!

ImageImageImageImageImage
USA! USA! USA! So, some of my closest friends from back home founded The American Outlaws, which is a US Soccer fan club, traveling all over the United States for games, networking, and tailgating to show their love for the sport. I am pretty stoked whenever the US Men’s National Team plays a game in LA, because it typically means they fly out from the Midwest and I get to hang with them and cheer on some soccer! I’ve grown to love the sport, and there are literally NO fans like soccer fans. The thing to know about soccer, since it’s not one of the top sports in the US for spectators, the people who go to these games are die-hard soccer fans. You are partying with the best of the best when you tailgate with the American Outlaws. And though I love all kinds of sports events, soccer will always hold a top place in my heart. These guys will take an indifferent spectator and make them a huge fan. And it’s magical to watch! Such an awesome day with best friends! I’m very blessed to have such a great group! :)

I’ve been wanting to do a game day type post for while, but I don’t really get to that many sports events these days so it hasn’t come up. This is the perfect opportunity to show how to dress stylishly, comfortably, and sport-friendly all in one. Sports events are out of our daily element for most people, so you have to put a little more thought into getting dressed. One half of the stadium will almost always be scorching hot in the sun, and when you become shaded, you get cold immediately, so layers are essential. At soccer games, it’s not uncommon to be showered with beer by overly excited fans, so my coated skinnies were perfect – the liquids rolled right off! I chose this bleached flannel for a more subtle take on the red white and blue colors, and the muscle tank beneath was crafted by yours truly in under 2 hours total the morning of the game. Tutorial on DIY game tees and tanks coming soon! We all know how hard it can be to find the right merch for your team, sporting both proper fit and style for a woman, so I typically get crafty and make my own with whatever top is in that season. Earlier last fall I made a cool swing crop top with one of the retro Husker football logos on it to pair with high-waisted cutoffs, but more on the technical details of sports team shirt-making coming soon!

Little Leather Valentine.

ImageImage

So apparently I have some sort of all-black approach to “holidays” in 2014 thus far…and I use the term holidays loosely, because…well, is Valentine’s Day really a holiday? In my book, it’s not. If I happen to get a special night out, then great, but if not, no big deal. Too often, we glamorize the behavior on this day that we should consciously display year round for our loved ones, but I will always look for an excuse to dedicate an evening to just the boyfriend and I! It’s not that often we take the time to plan an evening start to finish without other people involved, so that aspect is definitely fun!

To start, we got comfy at home and made an awesome dinner together. After that, we relaxed and let the food settle before changing and heading out for drinks at Firefly in Studio City. We neither one are into the crazy “2-weeks-in-advance-dinner-reservations” thing that happens in LA on Valentine’s Day, nor do we love fighting crowds when we are trying to spend time together on a date, so heading out in the later hours of the evening was perfect for us.

It’s always fun to feel a little fancier and sexier on Valentine’s Day, but truth be told, I had been itching to put this outfit combination together for a while and I would have worn it for any night out! This leather skirt is a smidge too big in the waist, and it actually worked out pretty well once I pumped my tummy full of way too much pineapple fried rice and wine! It’s form fitting, but definitely bodes well that it’s not too skin-tight. A high waisted pencil skirt, leather or not, is something you want to sit comfortably at the waist and hips without digging in. Why, you ask? So you can pair with a fun crop top!! Duh. The longer, and conservative-fitting skirt (especially in leather!) keeps a reallllly sexy vibe while over-compensating for the way the crop top is under-compensating in coverage. This is my absolute favorite crop top I own, and the sweetheart neckline and off-shoulder design were perfect for that “classic” sexy vibe.

I left out the red lips this time, (My boyfriend hates red lipstick – I think all guys do, bummer), and opted for a red suede pump instead to accent with. I didn’t realize until afterward how similar this look is to my NYE look a few weeks back, but oh well! The broken LBD look will never go out of style! Once again, excuse the iPhone snaps (NEED to start remembering the real cam when I head out), and hope everyone had a Happy Love Day as well! Kisses!

Pumps: Jessica Simpson
Bag: Aldo, shoulder strap detached for a clutch (similar here and here)

Classic Black for 2014.

ImageImageImageImageImage

Whoops. I swear I didn’t shake it. Gotta love those iPhone pics.

Oh, New Year’s Eve. What a night, every year. No matter how you look at it, it’s an excuse to let loose and have a good time. Let’s be real though, you’re doing one of two things: you’re either celebrating all you accomplished in 2013, and insist on making 2014 that much better…or you’re trying to forget 2013. Either way, alcohol is involved, and I swear everyone chooses to start the New Year off with a hangover because we can all only go up from there! Brilliant. Well guess what! I didn’t have a hangover this year, so I guess that leaves me with less to climb! Don’t get me wrong, I had a great time, I just stuck to one consistent beverage of choice instead of trying to be fair to all the other liquors out there. :)

This year, I was traveling for the holidays as I always do, and made it back to LA in time for New Year’s, but we didn’t really do a lot of planning. Sometimes, just winging it is the way to go. I don’t consider myself a “clubby” person, perhaps every once in a while a trip to Vegas is in order, but normally that is not an atmosphere that I crave. Clubs are always a last-minute option (and an expensive option to make it worth while for NYE), but this year, we kept it simple. We started the night by having a DELICIOUS dinner at The Six restaurant in Studio City, followed by…wait for it…a house party. And you know what? We had an awesome time with some fantastic people.

When it comes to dressing for NYE, I will admit there is always the urge to put on sequins and dress like a disco ball. In fact, the more sequins the better. Nothing rings in the New Year like built in confetti all over your body! And while the sequin and sparkle of New Year’s Eve will forever be a fun and classic approach, I actually ditched my rose gold sequin dress last minute in favor of something a little simpler. See, another “classic” of course, is the LBD. And this was a very simply-constructed dress with just the right amount of “party” involved with the peek-a-boo mesh areas. Not to mention, it was comfortable. Sorry sequins, I will save you for Vegas, or maybe next year. Simple as that, I chose a darker, exotic, all black approach. I kept my makeup pretty neutral with some smoky drama built up around the eyes, and it was perfect for the occasion without being overdone. Cheers to 2014, may it be our best year yet!
