I was thrilled recently to be asked to participate in a styling challenge with DailyLook, taking an LBD of my choice from their online selection and styling it from day to night. I love a good LBD, so this was a lot of fun for me. I feel like DailyLook has some amazing dresses available right now, and being asked to create some style sets was perfect timing to kick off a few Holiday Posts I have coming up.

After carefully browsing the selection of Little Black Dresses on DailyLook, and finding several I wanted in my closet, I chose this simple black shift number that I kept not being able to take my eyes off of. Maybe that sounds silly for this style challenge that is seasonally timed with the holidays. A good part of me wanted to gravitate toward some of the beautiful lace, embroidered, and beaded dresses I had in my wishlist, however, there was something about the extremely flattering shape of this simple shift, it’s versatility to fit the challenge, and the lack of shift dresses currently in my closet that sealed the deal for me. The winner for me was the “Richie Shift Dress”, and it’s affordable price and deep V made it the perfect amount “simple sexy”. I styled these two looks based on something I would actually wear to my office at work, and how I would switch it up to wear the same dress for a night out on the town, particularly a Holiday party.

For the Day Look, I paired the dress with comfortable, casual printed slip-ons, a neutral gray crossbody satchel, and gold art deco inspired bangles. An absolute staple in my wardrobe this time of year, along with several LBDs, is a faux fur vest, and I absolutely love the texture in this one. I know I know, this is probably not a super practical work outfit for a lot of people, but I am very fortunate that for working in a non-fashion related field, I get to pretty much be myself and wear whatever I want to work. I work for a major animation studio in a production environment, and half of my job is at a desk, and the other half is running around. So this is 100% perfect my job in entertainment.

Moving on to my Night Look, I definitely used the addition of some eye-catching accessories to spice this up and make it Holiday Party ready. The 60s-70s wannabe kid in me went straight to a fantastic over-the-knee boot to compliment the sleek tapered shape of the shift. With a mixture of more avant-garde statement jewelry and a contrasting beaded metallic clutch, this simple shift just went from zero to hero and is completely party ready without showing too much skin.

Camping Style: Renee Does Nature, Thanksgiving Edition

IMG_0178IMG_0190fullIMG_0209sqIMG_0212IMG_0197sqIMG_0218IMG_0145

Alright, so let’s be real here. I feel like I’m not as high maintenance as one would expect a style blogger to be, and I’m here to prove it to you with my 2nd-day hair and unshowered-natureness in this very delayed post about my Thanksgiving camping trip. While one may not call me the least maintenance person either, I think I do ok keeping a balance of realistic expectations when it comes to spending 4 days in the great outdoors.

It wasn’t until I met my boyfriend and started spending time with his family that I’ve recently gotten back into camping a couple times a year. Before that, it had been since my freshman year of college that I had actually done this, so I’m getting more and more relaxed with each experience. It’s really nice to be able to chill, enjoy the outdoors, and not care about your appearance as much. When my boyfriend’s family announced our Thanksgiving get together (about 20-some people) would be a camping trip up north in Pismo Beach this year, I was a little intrigued about how it would all come together, as well as excited. Excited for the flannels, the layers, the makeup-free days, the drinks by the fire (Bourbon Apple Cider anyone??), the off-roading on the sand dunes, and the amazing campfire food.

When it came to packing, I definitely had to have some strategy. I am a person who totally believes that you can be anywhere doing anything and your skin care does not need to suffer! I had a treasure trove of Sephora product samples, such as cleansers and moisturizers, so I was able to toss a few into my bag and finally use them up. Seriously, all those free samples are perfect for camping trips!

I can definitely camp and enjoy nature without needing too much, but I do also like to be somewhat comfortable. Maybe some would call this “glamping” since we were at a campground with showers and bathrooms, but that definitely made the experience much easier this time around. We slept in a tent, on cots, and I chose to only shower every other day since I was allowing my skin to take some time off. That part was nice. Pitching the tent on a spider nest however, was not! Thank God we didn’t notice until we were packing up…that may or may not be where I draw the line in my nature experiences.

When it came to clothing, I packed comfortable, warm, and layer-friendly options like flannels, stretch skinny jeans, leggings, wool socks, and warm pajama-like tops. Most of the time I was lounging in leggings, converse, and layered shirts and jackets, but for Thanksgiving Day I chose one of my favorite flannels, layered with a knit tank and thermal long sleeve underneath, and a heavy utility jacket on top. I wore some comfy boots with thick socks inside, and a camping staple – a beanie. On my face was only a tinted moisturizer from a free sample and mascara. Yes, I know, mascara is cheating. But if there is one product I cannot live without, it’s mascara. I have dark but fine eyelashes…so they tend to not even be visible on their own making my eyes look tired and haggard. All other makeup ditched, I was keeping the mascara! And thank goodness for professional Canon lenses making you look good! This would never fly as an iPhone pic. My boyfriend snapped these on my 5D about 5 minutes before our Thanksgiving feast, during golden hour. All that beautiful light is natural! Couldn’t have asked for a better way to spend Thanksgiving this year! :)
