Boyfriend Fit.

Nothing hides the fact that you’ve been slacking on your workouts better than boyfriend jeans and a Free People sweater! Let’s be real here. The last couple weeks I’ve felt like crap. Not sure why. I’m typically a very healthy eater, and it’s not so much that’ I’ve been eating like crap I guess, as it is me not strategizing what I eat, with when. Meaning, I probably don’t need to be eating pasta on days I haven’t worked out. That shizzz adds up, and I need to go back to my general rule being “if you didn’t earn it, don’t eat it.” I’m sure a lot of this sluggish feeling from my diet is in my head, or just a hormonal rut. Being gluten-free, I eat quite a bit of produce and natural food, lean proteins only usually (egg whites, chicken, shrimp, salmon), and you pretty much never see me with fast food. Chipotle is an occasional exception, though don’t get me wrong, I’m not at all calling that “healthy.” It might be time to hit Trader Joe’s though, and go on a portion-controlled veggie binge, balanced with lean proteins of course.

Regardless of what’s has been happening with my food habits and energy levels, I’ve been tossing on these boyfriend jeans a lot lately. With their already-loose cut, and the fact that I went up a size when I bought them to ensure the baggier effect, they’re working for me at the moment! Add in the loose sweater from Free People, and I call this look “homeless chic.” Chic, because when you’re totally slopping out on top, throw on a pair of ankle cuff heels and all becomes right with the world again! Free People makes some of my favorite sweaters, and this open-knit, flowy cut is perfect for a day when it’s a little warmer but not tank top weather. As women, we all have our “fat days” no matter what our size. Whether it’s your period, or you’ve been lagging on the gym, or that hole-in-the-wall Mexican taco stand that found you….or a combination of all three…it’s good to have some less-fitted options on hand when you’re not feeling like yourself. Even though you’re probably the only one who notices. But if anyone needs me, I’ll be on the treadmill because at some point I’m gonna have to stop wearing these pants.

Game Day!

USA! USA! USA! So, some of my closest friends from back home founded The American Outlaws, which is a US Soccer fan club, traveling all over the United States for games, networking, and tailgating to show their love for the sport. I am pretty stoked whenever the US Men’s National Team plays a game in LA, because it typically means they fly out from the Midwest and I get to hang with them and cheer on some soccer! I’ve grown to love the sport, and there are literally NO fans like soccer fans. The thing to know about soccer, since it’s not one of the top sports in the US for spectators, the people who go to these games are die-hard soccer fans. You are partying with the best of the best when you tailgate with the American Outlaws. And though I love all kinds of sports events, soccer will always hold a top place in my heart. These guys will take an indifferent spectator and make them a huge fan. And it’s magical to watch! Such an awesome day with best friends! I’m very blessed to have such a great group! :)

I’ve been wanting to do a game day type post for while, but I don’t really get to that many sports events these days so it hasn’t come up. This is the perfect opportunity to show how to dress stylishly, comfortably, and sport-friendly all in one. Sports events are out of our daily element for most people, so you have to put a little more thought into getting dressed. One half of the stadium will almost always be scorching hot in the sun, and when you become shaded, you get cold immediately, so layers are essential. At soccer games, it’s not uncommon to be showered with beer by overly excited fans, so my coated skinnies were perfect – the liquids rolled right off! I chose this bleached flannel for a more subtle take on the red white and blue colors, and the muscle tank beneath was crafted by yours truly in under 2 hours total the morning of the game. Tutorial on DIY game tees and tanks coming soon! We all know how hard it can be to find the right merch for your team, sporting both proper fit and style for a woman, so I typically get crafty and make my own with whatever top is in that season. Earlier last fall I made a cool swing crop top with one of the retro Husker football logos on it to pair with high-waisted cutoffs, but more on the technical details of sports team shirt-making coming soon!

Little Leather Valentine.

So apparently I have some sort of all-black approach to “holidays” in 2014 thus far…and I use the term holidays loosely, because…well, is Valentine’s Day really a holiday? In my book, it’s not. If I happen to get a special night out, then great, but if not, no big deal. Too often, we glamorize the behavior on this day that we should consciously display year round for our loved ones, but I will always look for an excuse to dedicate an evening to just the boyfriend and I! It’s not that often we take the time to plan an evening start to finish without other people involved, so that aspect is definitely fun!

To start, we got comfy at home and made an awesome dinner together. After that, we relaxed and let the food settle before changing and heading out for drinks at Firefly in Studio City. We neither one are into the crazy “2-weeks-in-advance-dinner-reservations” thing that happens in LA on Valentine’s Day, nor do we love fighting crowds when we are trying to spend time together on a date, so heading out in the later hours of the evening was perfect for us.

It’s always fun to feel a little fancier and sexier on Valentine’s Day, but truth be told, I had been itching to put this outfit combination together for a while and I would have worn it for any night out! This leather skirt is a smidge too big in the waist, and it actually worked out pretty well once I pumped my tummy full of way too much pineapple fried rice and wine! It’s form fitting, but definitely bodes well that it’s not too skin-tight. A high waisted pencil skirt, leather or not, is something you want to sit comfortably at the waist and hips without digging in. Why, you ask? So you can pair with a fun crop top!! Duh. The longer, and conservative-fitting skirt (especially in leather!) keeps a reallllly sexy vibe while over-compensating for the way the crop top is under-compensating in coverage. This is my absolute favorite crop top I own, and the sweetheart neckline and off-shoulder design were perfect for that “classic” sexy vibe.

I left out the red lips this time, (My boyfriend hates red lipstick – I think all guys do, bummer), and opted for a red suede pump instead to accent with. I didn’t realize until afterward how similar this look is to my NYE look a few weeks back, but oh well! The broken LBD look will never go out of style! Once again, excuse the iPhone snaps (NEED to start remembering the real cam when I head out), and hope everyone had a Happy Love Day as well! Kisses!

Gray Day in LA.

A little bit of chilly drizzle isn’t enough to slow me down, but it is enough to slow everyone else down. Every time it rains out here, people drive as if a little water is not only going to ruin the finish on their Mercedes, but will also kill them. So frustrating when you’re trying to get somewhere. The freeways turn into the biggest mess over a few little drops falling from the sky. Come on people, you don’t know what weather actually is. In fact, can you even tell it’s raining on me in this photo?? Didn’t think so.

Anyway, staying waterproof from the waist down in coated skinnies and over the knee boots, and cozy from the waist up in a chunky scarf and a super-old patterned wool coat I’ve resurrected from 2008.

Sunday Brunch.

My boyfriend and I are really obsessed with this brunch place, Overland Café, over in my Culver City neighborhood. In fact, we frequent this place several times a month for both brunch AND their awesome dinner menu. I’m not much of a day drinker, it knocks me out too much, but it’s pretty hard to pass up their $6.99 bottomless champagne/mimosa brunch special. In fact, it’s pretty hard for everyone else in the neighborhood to pass it up too apparently, as every weekend the place is PACKED. Their food is amazing and I always walk/waddle away stuffed, so it’s pretty much a necessity to wear something that hides the food baby bump! Enter: my eat-a-lot skirt. Layer it up with some cozy boot socks and a faux fur vest and I’ve got just enough warmth balancing the cool sunshine.

Skirt: F21 (super old)
Tank: Urban Outfitters
Socks: Urban Outfitters (I removed the buttons)
Boots: Steve Madden
Vest: Ann Taylor (gifted)
